MapSource Software explained, and System Requirements.

Your preference for map detail and your specific activities will determine which MapSource CD is right for you. MapSource gives you the flexibility to select the mapping coverage you need. Every MapSource software product has a trip and waypoint manager function that can transfer your waypoints, routes, and tracks, but you need to ask yourself the question, What will I use the software for most?

Lets take a moment and explain what the software is and what it does. Cartography is the art and science of making maps, and Garmin has a team of cartographers and engineers who developed the digital geographic data that can be used in almost all of their GPS line.

MapSource products give the GPS the geographic data in a CD-ROM format, which can be viewed on your PC. Additionally, some of the Garmin units can accept map downloads from various products to augment the detail already on your Garmin GPS basemap. A basemap has only limited detail but will have major highways, cities, political boundaries, major rivers etc.

While using MapSource, the trip and waypoint planning function is compatible with all Garmin GPS systems that we sell. The map transfer feature is compatible with a number of Garmin GPS units, so please check your specific Garmin GPS unit and specific product for compatibility.

MapSource software will let you view color maps on your personal computer. It has a zoom and pan function that makes it so easy to browse your map. You can use the trip and waypoint manager we spoke about earlier to help you create your own waypoints, routes, and tracks, and transfer them between your PC and nearly all Garmin GPS units. This is excellent for planning your next outdoor adventure, business trip, vacation, or recreational outing without ever leaving your house.

For those units that accept the map transfer feature, users can either download MapSource CD ROM content to data cards or directly to their units depending on the GPS product that they own. To download information directly to your GPS, simply connect your Garmin GPS to your PC using a PC interface cable. Select the map areas on screen, and with the click of the mouse, the information downloads to your GPS. Some units require a Garmin data card to download. Garmin offers a variety of blank data cards, including an 8MB, 16MB, 32MB, 64MB and 128MB. Choose the size that best fits your required coverage area.

When using a locked MapSource product, the real-time track plotting function will work only with a valid unlock code for the GPS unit being used. Each product is sold separately, however, more than one product can be used and downloaded into a Garmin-compatible unit.

System Requirements
IBM-compatible PC running Windows 98, Windows ME, Windows 2000, Windows NT 4.0 (requires Internet Explorer 4.0 or greater), or Windows XP operating system; 32MB RAM minimum; between 300 MB and 1.5GB free hard disk space; CD-ROM drive; available serial port; 256 color display adapter and monitor (24 bit recommended); and mouse or other pointing device; PC Interface cable. Internet access is also recommended to make use of the unlock process

What does the "MAP" mean on some of our prices?

In order to give you our discount GPS pricing, we must advertise using MAP. MAP stands for "Minimum Advertised Price." Due to agreements with our manufacturers, we are not allowed to advertise our discount GPS prices on many of their products. This is because our discount GPS prices are below their minimum allowed advertise price. This price is called the "MAP" price. In order for us to show you our everyday low discount GPS prices, you will need to add the item to your shopping cart by clicking the "Our Price" button on some of our items. You are in no way obligated to purchase an item when you place it in your shopping cart and it may be removed at any time. We're sure that the discount GPS prices you find at OpenSky will mean your items will never leave the shopping cart.

Because OpenSky GPS only stocks some of the bigger selling GPS systems, you may not see a GPS system that fits your specific need. If you are looking for any particular GPS that we do not have listed, please drop us an email with what GPS system  or type of GPS systems you are interested in. We will take special request and be happy to find  those GPS systems that you are looking for.  If you are looking for a car GPS  for your company vehicle and will be purchasing more than three systems, please request a bulk discount by sending an email to our customer service department with "bulk GPS systems" in he subject line.
